First Impressions - Cheesy n' fun

Postby CALiGeR190 » 08 September 2016, 18:37

Ok. These guys are fun, getting that out there right now, they are ridiculous fun.
They are also very good... but I cant decide whether they are too good...

They have amazing flexibility, able to fire in a 360 degree arc with most of their weapons and can fire them all directly forwards, no loss in DPS while manoeuvring on very manoeuvrable ships.

Can be given whats basically Nurgle's effect with two upgrades to their PD (seeker missiles plus markerlights)

Can have an armour rating of 75 applied to their frontal shield (which is massive cheese when combined with the PD upgrade and the good frontal armour)

Can have an upgrade to take 2 of the most OP escorts in the game currently (although the ships in question that take them are expensive).

And have a frankly pretty broken favour. The water Caste favour baffles me. It simultaneously renders the Inq and IN favours for the IN practically obsolete... and those where both already very powerful favours on their own.
The others are all pretty strong but I wouldn't say any are OP, bar the Water Caste favour.

BUT they are slow.

Pretty absurdly fragile to anything with AP or a respectable amount of DPS.

Nothing special in terms of accuracy.

Very poor boarding potential.

And most of their other favours are just ok-good...

Basically its very hard for me to tell if they are OP or not, defiantly not weak though, and I have to repeat that they are a lot of fun!
Otherwise, I love the visuals, sound and voice design of the Tau, it's all been done very well: I just cant decide on balance and the incredibly cheesy upgrades.

Lost my first game against them, won all the others. Most with the Tau player rage quitting as I'm using my Chaos MoT 15k lance fleet.

When they do manage to catch one of my ships, it hurts. A lot.

I think we'll need some more time to see how they fare against the other factions as in ranked there are not many playing anything other than Tau.

Yep.
Them being bad at close range is BS if you're running the right upgrades as well, they melt hp in no time at 3K with the PD upgrades.

That's because spamming vision breakers with that dumb beacon bug where it doesn't properly reveal ships who pass through it when under a nebula effect+tau's short range for abilities means they will NEVER have a way to reveal you consistently which means they can't play the game.

It's a design issue because no faction should be completely and irrevocably hard countered by a singular flavor ability+fleet theme. If the beacon bug got fixed with this latest patch that might be enough to fix the situation, if not...this is going to be a prevailing theme.

Tau are pretty great, they're a lot like Space Marines and Chaos had a baby but it turned out Eldar was the daddy so they all had to go to family therapy.

They are kind of like Eldar, either they die quickly or you die quickly. They can eradicate focused ships very fast, but also die instantly to bombers/lances unless they have proper cover and engage Brace for Impact.

Also as for Tau bots: they suck. Once they get into range they just sit and shoot due to default prow firing stance. Also tend to group a lot of escorts on a small area much like ork ships.

Guess it's too early to shout OP or WEAK only a few hours after release, we'll see how it turns out over the next week.

They didn't release the fix with this patch? I know they fixed a minor visual glitch on Despoiler, as well as additional turrets on Desolator so they did implement some fixes to other races.

Didn't notice whether they fixed the beacon vision bug or not.

Not sure, seems the servers went down. :( So I can't level my Tau fleet to check.

dont know the actual names jet but...
earth cast: experimental railgun 25k shield ignoring armor penetrating , i need some practice aiming it tho, you only get 1 shot unlike eldar
upgrade that makes you stealth permanently until you get spotted
emission dissipators
lots of probes

but they are slow enough that this might actually be fun to counter
since i cant connect i have been trying against AI, 3 shots for a SM cruiser to go down to the railgun, the torpedoes were still only halfway :D
might be a bit to strong, i have been on the receiving end and my poor LC just dissapeared
any lore reason or precedent of railguns ignoring voids, atleast old lore had it block things based on speed(for example bombers and torpedoes were ignored) a railgun should be a definite no on the "is this allowed to pass?" question

There has been no mention of any such weapon in Black Library either.

well it is a prototype railgun, so pretty new
but what i meant was the interaction railgun speeds vs voidshields
do the hammerheads (i think those are tho ones with railguns?) get some bonus vs titan voids?
is there any mention on going to fast for voids to catch in the lore?
