They're similar to Hellguns, they're not macro cannons, they're lazer weapons, which likely cannot penetrate shields or armour, and probably re-served for soft targets, basically it's a turbo multi-lazer.

While I agree they should be blasting lasers away at the enemy, visuals doesn't need to result in actual damage, perhaps a small shield drain, or boarding bonus could apply, balanced by reducing the troop value, and increasing the shields on ships without extra weapons?

Or simply have them fire if the extra turrets upgrade is applied? Call it an anti-ship weapon? Would work for ORKS too.

where do you have this info from?
source please

also troop value doesnt effect boarding chance just boarding defense
so you would want imps to be better offensive boarders but worse defensively?
that kinda contradicts imp ships being built to counter boarders (things like hallways being too long to trow grenades around) but tau ships not being like that (tau dont throw as far so its hard for them to calculate)

"Voidsunder Lance Battery - Commonly mounted on the Dauntless-class Light Cruisers constructed in the Calixis Sector and neighbouring sectors, the Voidsunder Lance Battery sacrifices flexibility for raw power. Mounted in massive housings hanging off a warship's prow and rear fins, these weapons provide a Light Cruiser with a ship-breaking punch. However, only Grand Cruisers are large enough to potentially mount these weapons on dorsal turrets instead, limiting their usefulness."

EDIT:
"A furious set of Lances are set to fire past the ship's prow on any enemy coming too close."

It's in the book doncha know? Page 112, BFG Rules.
So the solution is simply to have them fire with lances, and be replaced on ships without them.
