torpedoes not following target priority

Postby Ashardalon » 13 September 2016, 06:55

i have noticed that homing torpedoes dont go after the target i have designated as priority 1
in a station assault mission i had the station at 2 the platforms at 3 the BB's at 1 but my torpedoes kept going after the station even though i was able to keep sight on the BB non-stop
is there some kind of hidden priority going on? even after setting both the station on platforms to 4 the autocast kept shooting at the station instead of the barge
my ships where pointing right at the barges, i even hit a few, of which the rest of the volley continued on to the station

I've had this happen too multiple times but only when I set priority to defense platforms/space station before ships, then the torpedoes do whatever they feel like.

doesnt happen always but i have had torpedoes ignore closer targets of the same priority and instead go for a target on the other side of the map
torpedo target priority seems off

They have a weird way of selecting their target.

Of course I leave them on auto-cast, the cooldown is short, so I'd miss out several chances to fire if I handled it manually, and not having to aim seems to be a great thing about homing missiles anyway.

However they tend to do things like lock on to the target behind me, instead of the one in front because it was slightly closer, so as soon as they arm, they make a 180 turn, try to catch the ship behind me, and promptly hit my own vessels.

I think I can negate most of these accidents by positioning my ships more carefully, but at this point, I'd say my own vessels - and especially defense platforms- ate more of my own missiles than the enemy.

Maybe since they are the super-techy race, these things could have a Friend-or-Foe identification subroutine? Deal no damage to friendly targets and / or fly no closer than X distance to friendly targets.

But they should definitely favor targets in the frontal arc, regardless of distance.

Seems like the same issue with the sm homing torpedoes. Especially annoying is when you play breakthrough and every torpedo you fire go for the defensive platforms bleh. Or maybe tau is even worse. <shrugs>

I prefer to fire them always manually.
- Especially, since everybody wants to trigger your auto-abilitys with 1 or 2 escorts. 8-)

The same goes for Bombers, fighters, torpedos, bombs, and all the other stuff too. :D

In my opinion it's way better to miss a few times, but have 100% control when an for which target the ability is used.
And beside that, it allow's me to choose always the perfect angle to fire guided missiles, - especially in a 2vs2, where your mates often fly in your way.

The priority problem hasen't apperared much often in my games, because i don't set that many at the same time.
Mostly, i set 1 or 2 and switch the one always to the ship, i want to fire at the moment. If i want to fire random, i used the command button in the interface on the left side.^^

Some of the abilitys work also really fine, if you use the right click to auto activated it just at the moment you want to use all of it at the same time, like: "boosting into range, and if you see a target losses his shields, then set priority one and right click on lightning strike to activate 2 or 3 simultaneosly, and directly after that, deactivate the ability by using right click again, until the next situation and target for it appears).

This game isn't world of warcraft. The dps means nothing if you wasted it on the wrong ships, or at the wrong time.
Many People for example, spamming torps always at cooldown. But most of them never hit, just forced the enemy to change his direction a little bit at best. In my opinion it's better to have it ready until the right time appears to fire it. ;)

As a matter of fact I've had problems with target priority with my lances too. My ships sometimes stick to targets with lower priority even if they don't have explicit order to attack it, and even if both ships (higher and lower priority) are at about the same distance from firing ship.

I'm talking about lances because they are much easier to notice than macro projectiles.

i know what you mean, it appears often on my Slaanesh-Desolator battleship fr example.

I need to keep a closer watch about that in the future.
At last, i was just thinking: "my ship just fire at the other target, because my broadside is not in the right angle for the main target".
But maybe you're right, and this is another bug (or another version of the same bug ^^), we're talking about.
