Well, I perfectly understand that is not clear, and we've reworked the tooltips in order to be more accurate.
So, A Manta bomber deals 90 damage in 1 attack, but there is only 1 manta bomber in the Tau bomber squadron.(Only one squadron is launched per Launch Bay).
Every squadron in the game have a total 6 hit points ( for the Tau bomber squadron : 1 Manta (4 Hit points) + 2 Fighters (1 Hit points each)
The number of attack (per bomber) displayed a wrong value and the tooltip was wrong, it should have said : "Number of attacks vs ordnance: 5".(This have been change for the release of the Tau).
When a bomber squadron encounter another squadron, the number of attack against this squadron is : 5 (for the Manta bomber) + 4 (2 attacks per escort fighter) = 9 attack test inflicted to the enemy squadron.
At least, the upgrade "Energy Shield" grants its bonus to the following ordnance: Barracuda Fighter; Manta Bomber and Barracuda escort Fighter( escorting the Manta).
I hope this clarify this feature.
Have a good day all of you.
Huh, thank you for this information. This is certainly... interesting.
Tau bombers are realized in quite an interesting way. Right now Manta is the most reliable ordinance damage dealer in the whole game(as it is the hardest one to destroy in its squadron)... unless enemy uses Brace for Impact, then all 90 damage could be wasted on 45%(53% for chapter master) chance to resist a hit. Still, that's kinda a small downside. Manta squadron is very effective against ordinance as well - it has 9 attacks, on par with Thunderhawks, while usual bomber squadrons have only 6, and only ork bombers have 12 attacks. And with "Energy Shield" upgrade it can have 9 hitpoints as well, which is... reeeeally interesting. Kinda close to being op against any fleet without fighter screens, as Mantas will stay alive against just turrets 90% of the time.
And Barracuda Fighters are nothing special at first, but with "Energy Shield" they become kinda the best fighters in the game, even better than the Eldar. With 2 hitpoits they become like a swarm of a little defensive Thunderhawks(and with 12 attacks per squadron instead of 9). Combined with turret range upgrades plus escorts turrets and/or a very powerful Custodian turrets they can become an invincible defense. I feel this is kinda OP and makes carrier fleets completely unviable against Tau.
I like, that Tau have such a cool long range macro mentality with heavy reliance on an escort cover, as well as having an option to go for a Nurgle-like turrets with 2-3 upgrades(but I think it should be 1 DPS for every 3 turrets and by no means a "pure damage", rather lance-like one aka armor-piercing - that still would make it into an excellent close range strategy). Having an carrier option is also a nice idea for them, but currently, with the right crew and just 1-2 upgrades their carrier fleet transforms from very powerful into the best one. I can be wrong here of course, because Tau ships have quite low HP and that can even things out, but still, I'm afraid they need some nerf in this department.
