I like the Idea of marking targets with escorts, you could even consider making the marker escorts really unique - give them perma-silent running but no other weapon systems. that way they arnt abusable as sniper ships but you can hide them on the edge of sensors to support other ships - if your micro is good enough.

I seem to recall that IN got to load homing torps under some additional rules in TT. That would work well for Tau.

Torpedoes would aim towards nearest enemy in their front 90° arc, if no enemy there it would go straight. Also while fast, they would not be too agile just like on TT, so player seeing them could set up to avoid them by moving from their front arc.

While they could force some ships to reveal themselves from far shots (red button, all ahead full etc. to get away from the front arc), the real advantage would be in close quarter fighting, since Tau could launch spreads straight into furball of mixed enemy/own ships and leave the opponents a choice between evading and disengaging the current target or taking full spread head on.
