How to play as chaos?

Postby Fredlaren » 29 April 2016, 23:54

I mainly play orkz, and I just can't get the hang of chaos, and lose most of my matches... How can this faction be played well either with brawling or on long range?

Chaos are a lot of fun to play! I have a blast with them, but I can see how they would be tricky for a newbie.

Chaos *can* brawl, if you'd like. You can load up on slaughters with nurgle mark, and brace for impact before slamming home into the enemy fleet. Chaos can also kite! Load up on lance boats, or carriers, and try to stay at range.

I personally, prefer a mix, and I've been very successful with it.

Think of a chaos fleet as a pack of wolves. Your Ork or IN opponent is a bear. If you get caught by the bear, you die. But you're much faster. You dart around his fleet, picking at him slowly. Chaos don't really have any massive burst weapons. It's a slow death that the enemies of the dark gods suffer. Circle him. Split your fleet up, and circle him, like lions trying to separate a wildebeest from the rest of the herd.

You poke, poke, poke. Whenever he turns towards one element of your fleet, turn away and bolt. While this happens, the other aspects of your fleet get closer and poke. If your opponent turns to chase another group, run it away, and bring the first one back in. Nip at him until he gets careless. Sometimes he'll split his fleet up, and you can pounce on a straggler. I love to target engines, because it means eventually one ship gets separated from the pack.

Eventually, you will have dealt enough damage and the enemy fleet will be suffering. That's when you decide to close in and finish. Turn all your groups towards him and dive in to brawling range to clean up.

It's a very fun playstyle if done correctly. But you need to really be on your toes watching each of your groups. Getting chain-taunted or traktor beamed can easily lose you a ship!

I personally run a Styx, as an offensive carrier. A Hades, (the fore-damage is great when chasing other chaos players). 3 Carnages are too good to pass up. They hit hard at range, and aren't afraid to get dirty in a brawl. And they're cheap! Great ships. Then I have 3 hellbringers as kiting carriers, and 1 mk2 as a sneaky ship to field in assassination missions.

Play around with speed. I've found that the improved thruster upgrade is mandatory on all chaos ships!

Don't bother with escorts! True to tabletop, chaos escorts are garbage, and the fleet's true strength lies in its cruisers!

The one with lances, once upgraded with range and shield damage, is a great support ship.

Ah, the one that improves your thruster gauge by 25%. You're going to be doing a lot of HETs and AAFs as chaos, and it really helps to have that extra juice to burn.

More or less correct.

Same as above

Eventually, you will have dealt enough damage and the enemy fleet will be suffering. That's when you decide to close in and finish. Turn all your groups towards him and dive in to brawling range to clean up.

Only, and I mean only, rush in for a kill when you're certain they can't turn it around on you. Do not try it against orks unless they're already chunked heavily.

It's a very fun playstyle if done correctly. But you need to really be on your toes watching each of your groups. Getting chain-taunted or traktor beamed can easily lose you a ship!

The styx is a good ship.

A Hades, (the fore-damage is great when chasing other chaos players).

No, no, no. OP, don't ever touch the hades or the murder, there is absolutely no point to them, they cannot do anything that another ship cannot do better.

3 Carnages are too good to pass up. They hit hard at range, and aren't afraid to get dirty in a brawl.

They do not hit hard at range, and are only "effective" in the optimal macro cannon distance. You can try it against imperials, you can do it against chaos, and you can even do great with it against eldar, but don't you ever try and brawl orks.

And they're cheap! Great ships.

They aren't "great" ships, they're ok now that balance dynamics have shifted in their favor, but mostly they get by because of the power of nurgle mark against weaker brawling opponents.

Then I have 3 hellbringers as kiting carriers, and 1 mk2 as a sneaky ship to field in assassination missions.

The beam hellbringer is pretty trash, stick to the carrier one. Maneuver gauge upgrade is not "mandatory".

Don't bother with escorts! True to tabletop, chaos escorts are garbage, and the fleet's true strength lies in its cruisers!

He's correct, chaos escorts are armed almost purely with missile pods, and missile pods are absolute shit, and don't benefit from macro upgrades.

The escort he's referring to has a single prow lance, and is terrible. Do not do this.

Source: My ass, but I've been playing with them since they were first added, and all the testing points towards it not working, but then again they're so weak anyway.

For a more valid source, you can look at the tooltips, and notice that between factions, all the different weapons that are affected certain upgrades are listed. Orks show guns and kannonz, for example.

None of the chaos upgrades mention missile pods.

Edit: To clarify, it says the macro range upgrade works on missile pods in the fleet screen, but this doesn't apply in game. What part of that is the bug, I have no idea.

It has a single prow lance and 360 missiles that are meh.

WIth range upgrade, the lance does have a range of 9000. The ship is cheap and a good filler. It's reasonably fast, 200 HP, and if you upgrade it with range upgrade, spotting range upgrade and shield damage increase, it can be both a scout and / or a fire support weapon that isn't "great" but is far from bad too.

Yes, and it does 12 damage every 12 seconds, for whopping one dps, with a long break in between damage spurts.

The ship is cheap, by virtue of being an escort. It's not a good ship, but you're just using it because you can't use those points for real ships, so that doesn't really matter in that case.

Yes, upgraded escorts can be used as scouts. For scouting purposes, you'd probably get better mileage out of the iconoclast because it has 262 speed as opposed to 225.

or a fire support weapon that isn't "great" but is far from bad too.

It doesn't have the firepower to deserve the title of fire support. It's a bad ship, all the chaos escorts are particularly bad, but I'll agree that it does hold the dubious honor of being top of the shit heap when it comes to chaos escorts.
