Imperial Escorts - A Discussion

Postby Marwynn » 06 May 2016, 14:55

Let's have a concentrated thread for Escort builds and tactics. We've had to use these things and sometimes they can be fun to take out for kicks.

So share your builds and tactics! They ain't the greatest but they can do in a pinch.

Widowmaker (39 points)
Upgrades: Improved Augur Array, Advanced Cogitator Linkages, Emissions Dissipator

I'm really glad Tindalos gave the IN this Escort. A detection range of 10,000 is impressive, plus it has torps for giving away its location...

With the upgrades the detection radius is 12,500 units. You can use All Ahead Full without revealing your ship, and can keep Silent Running up for more than a minute.

You only really need the Improved Augur Array though. Someone I played against had Navigational Shields on it, allowing his Widowmaker to go through (or hide) in asteroid fields. Pretty neat.

Cobra (37 points)
Upgrades: Short Burn Torpedoes

I don't use this very often. When I do, it's to make torpedoes rain. I've seen someone add Additional Void Shield Generator and Hull Reinforcement, giving it 150 Shields and Hull, and set these to brawl at 3k. Its macros can deal 2 DPS, which isn't too bad.

Firestorm (41 points)
Upgrades: Refined Lenses, Additional Void Shield Generator, Voss Pattern Shield/Hull Reinforcement

Used against slow, heavy opponents. Orkz and Imperials come to mind. It also has a 2 DPS macro turret, but you ideally want this out of that range to provide constant annoyance to the enemy. At 3K range it can deal a bit more damage than an unupgraded Sword by virtue of its lance.

Sword (42 points)
Upgrades: Armour-Piercing Ammunition, Additional Void Shield Generator, Hull Reinforcement

This is an all-rounder build. Somewhat tanky, meant to be set to 3K and broadside fire. Switch to prow engagement if the target ships are burning towards your line ships. Sometimes their 'broadside' maneuvering pulls them out of position.

There's an offensive build with AP ammo, Turbo Weaponry, and Targeting Matrix. Really very anti-Eldar, with the AP being the only concession to the other races. Four to six of these firing out to 9K (assuming you have vision, you took a Widowmaker against Eldar didn't you?) don't do that much damage. Eldar holofields still halve macro hit chances. At 6-9k with the Targeting Matrix, the accuracy is about 55% against normal targets with 50% at 9k. That means at 9k you're hitting with 25% of your shots.

So with a Sword's two 2 DPS macros that means you're doing 1 DPS per sword for every Eldar target at 9K. Good news is that they won't be at 9k for long, only the Voidstalker will get that in the next balance patch.

Everyone else will be at 6k. I can live with just the AP Ammo and Turbo Weaponry upgrade, saving the third upgrade slot for more shields or hull.

Yeah I would go for IAA, NS, and ED on Widowmaker. She's the best scout for the IN.

Did that fight against the guy with the Nav shields on the Widomaker end up with two of your escorts chasing his widomaker?

Because then it was me :P

Seems like a solid list, allthought i stick to nav shields on the widowmaker, not only for hide, but it helps with getting intel faster if you dont have to run arround those roid fields

Yeah I also use widowmakers the same way. improved stealth, ED and the nav shields. superb anti-eldar boat imo. one of the best ive found. really makes it hard for them to sneak up and lance your ass :)

According to the tooltip, Advanced Cogitator Linkages does not improve Silent Running, only the other three special orders. Silent Running would be improved by the Camo upgrade which has been replaced by the ramming spur for the Imperium. If this is correct (otherwise it would surely be a bug) there is no reason not to use NavShields.

Brace for Impact order is a good way to improve the Widowmaker's survival though. And Reload! help with the torpedoes.

But Acc and Range are conter productive to AP, one works only on 3K and less, the other 2 on 6K and up

Probably an all rounder build. Useful against Eldar at range but also against anyone else as they're closing in. Having dedicated pursuers against a Chaos kiting fleet is big.
