Can you not read numbers? Novas scatter with 20-25% hit chance for landing ANY damage.

And we're done. I've given you a theoretical example and Hero's given you an actual example of why allowing a 300 damage direct hit with the Nova cannons would be OP. I'm not gonna get into a pissing contest with you on this, I disagree with your proposed changes for the stated reasons. ::washes hands::

We were discussiong the current novas. But if you want to check my idea...:

And yeah, my one would not be OP because probes can be evaded easily.

300 damage to a single target with 150 seconds cooldown is 2 dps. Nothing really amazing, and it would need LOS.

Eldar can do 600 burst with 30 sec cooldown, orks can easily do greater if RNG favours them already.

And this is exactly why Tindalos thinks 144 Ork weapons and the current Pulsars are great design. Bravo.

The issue for me is that Nova Cannons are strong enough against Eldar (as long as you bring as many as you can, but then, why wouldn't you against Eldar?) but weak against everyone else.

Against Eldar: all this talk that it's mathematically impossible to hit their ships with the NC is nonsense. The best-case scenario for Eldar is that they bring their 3 top ships (BB and 2 BCs), with the most health and the least micro required to keep them alive. That minimises the nova hits on the Eldar ships. With more, lighter Eldar ships, they're not only more likely to get hit, but going to feel the pain more as they're hit.

Honestly, I tried to play as Eldar, gave up before I got to 1 BB and 2 BCs, and went back to playing as Imperials. I walk all over most Eldar players with my NCs, but admittedly I've not faced a Voidstalker/Eclipse duo played well yet...

Against Chaos: in my experience, the NC simply doesn't out-DPS them well enough at their engagement range for it to be worth it. You're better off bringing ships that can either chase properly or that can fight back at longer range.

Against other Imperials: I find the NC a little weak, but not useless. It usually gives shields a few hits before everything devolves into a general melee. Still, I think there's better things to spend your Renown on.

Against Orks: bringing NCs up against Orks is suicide, in my experience. The only thing they're good against is Ork escorts -- and while a lot of Ork players do field a lot of Escorts, it won't help you much against their line ships. Knock 100 health on an Ork ship? Great, it keeps charging up until it gets close and beats you up. For the same points I'd rather have ships that can try to kite them or harry them.

Well said. I know HERO pisses some people off, but I think he's right on the money right now.

And this is exactly why Tindalos thinks 144 Ork weapons and the current Pulsars are great design. Bravo.


Pulsars can do 30x3 (90) damage in 30 seconds. That's 3 dps and there are multiple pulsars on eldar ships. Novas don't come with multiple barrels.
Eclipse has 3, Void stalker 4. That's 3x3= 9dps and 3x4=12 dps with high burst, or 270 and 360 burst. They can also do it every 30 seconds.
