Some things translated very well from the tabletop and others dident. Lanceboats I dont think are one of those things. I think lances themselves quite nicely shown compared to the lore but because of the way in which shields work you hardly get the same effect that you see in the TT.

The reason for that is simply a pace issue, and a difference versus real time versus turn based.

In the TT you can strips shields with your batteries, and then hammer with lances, effectivly negating the issue that shields mostly make lances harmless. You can all do that in the same turn and more or less simultaniously. You cant do that in a game with real time.

That said, the low damage output of lances (which in TT was probably there for balance purposes) is kept. So lances feel very underwhelming compared to batteries.

I'd say that sums the situation up pretty well. So we're left with an entire category of weapons for the Imperial Navy that aren't good enough to be a primary armament, which is ironically the exact same situation the IN is in in universe. The only lance-only ships are either battleships that have the armour and broadside size to make them essentially mini-death stars, and the Gothic which is usually assigned to anti-piracy and convoy missions (this is presumably why the Gothic is the 2nd most common cruiser class out there, so the navy doesn't have to put proper line ships on escort duties) where it's lances do the same thing to raiders as the Apocalypse does to cruisers.

I wonder how tough it would be for the devs to add a behavior (perhaps a button up by hold fire?) that directed lance boats to "hold lances" until target void shields were down. Benefit: lances are actually used as the counter-armor weapons they are. Cost: lower average DPS while dropping shields.

I can't really see it happening, and even if it did I'm pretty sure it would be useless. In TT it made sense to fire your macros first to bring down shields and then lance the target, but this is obviously a completely different system based on dps over salvo strength. A cruiser only firing half its broadside with no actual benefit (saying "lances are actually used as the counter-armor weapons they are" isn't a benefit, it's a result) is honestly just dumb.

Lances still have their place against high armour targets like marines and the prows on Ork and Tau ships (their shields can get armour right?) and while they have slow DPS they are very reliable. Nothing quite as annoying as seeing most of your battery shells hit and hardly any doing damage because of armour :(
