Ideas for fleet comps from TT players and to understand how ships work together (at least in theory)
For those who challenge the might of the Imperium I laugh at you as you desperately try to damage the armored prow while I watch you scrabble to doge my glorious swarm of torpedoes. Eldar please run away

The imperial ships rely on very good management to make up for certain deficiencies and so I was wondering how that was going to translate into a game where I think the limit is around 15 ships. How does it balance the Fleets if elder get the same number of ships as an ork player there is a serious imbalance. Also the key for most fleets is unit comp so that things are always supported by other ships, however limiting the number of ships renders escorts useless as about 4 swords=cruiser in terms of survivability so why would you wast 1/3 of your fleet on them.

No one knows exactly what limitations there are. From the videos it seems the fleets are about the 1-1.5k mark (with point values seem to be close to TT). It is unlikely that there is a ship count restriction in of itself, although having a lot of ships is fairly unlikely unless you're playing Eldar (who can use a lot of escorts) or using a lot of light cruisers (or decided that only escorts was a good idea which may or may not be the case ingame).

I can post some fleet lists but a lot of fleet building is option. Few things were objectively better when comparing ships within its own fraction as many ships' performance depended on the situation and enemy. A Carnage for example could do a heavy number on Eldar, but against Orks and Imperials it could have trouble doing damage early due to their frontal armor. A Desolator could do consistent damage to enemies at range, yet be almost helpless against an Eldar fleet.

My TT fleet (IIRC, without having a look upstairs) contained:

1 Emperor Class Battleship
2 Mars Class Battlecruisers
2 Lunar Class Cruisers
1 Dominator Class Cruiser
1 Gothic Class Cruiser
9 Sword Class Frigates, in three squads of three

The Emperor Class puts enough strike craft into space that you can relax a bit; it's the only good dedicated IN carrier (The Mars class is a fantastic ship, but if you look at it purely from a carrier perspective and it's very pricey for what you get.) The Emperor was also the only platform for assault boats that the IN got in the original ship set. The IN struggled a bit to win in a carrier war with Chaos, the general flow was to purely launch fighters to try and hold the line, and then when you got in close and bombers were almost impossible to intercept, you started throwing the bombers and assault boats about. Great flagship because it got a +1 Leadership buff, which meant you could buy a cheaper admiral and spend more points on moar dakka

Mars Classes are godly; they have everything an Imperial player wants. Long range, Nova Cannon, strike craft. Great flagship for a smaller battlegroup.

Lunar Classes are your bread and butter. Alone they're a bit weak, but it's a case where the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Cheap way to thicken your torpedo line.

The Dominator is basically a Nova Cannon platform with powerful batteries, so it's good against Eldar (although it doesn't have that much reach). Good for pummelling ligher targets, or dropping shields for Lances to shred the hull.

Speaking of Lances, you have the Gothic Class, which was for last-hitting targets which where more heavilly armoured, and again, thickened out the torpedo line.

Swords were because I couldn't afford a worthwhile number of escorts of any other class.

Nice! I saw in some video in another post link where ship management was about optimum at around 7 ships. More would give problems with micro-management. However the video also said that there were some 'automatic' commands that could be given that eased that click fest problem somewhat. I would think that auto-commands might be a good way to help handle those squadrons of Light Cruisers and Escorts. I saw your main fleet was 9 ships I think. Seems like a well rounded fleet.

What was the largest fleet you ever played (points wise)? Did you ever have more than 2 fleets on the table? The presence of gas clouds, asteroids and debris was mentioned but also space mines, which, I understand, can be purchased and will 'chase' enemy ships. Did you guys use the various torpedoes (especially boarding torps)? What about the Space marine assault boats?

Ahhh...too many questions. Thanks for the post of your fleet composition.

the fleet I own consists of the following
1 Apocalypse
1 Retribution
2 Mars class battle cruisers
1 gothic class
2 dominator class
4 lunar class
2 defiant light cruisers
3 firestorm escorts
8 sword secorts
4 cobra class escorts
I field generally most of the cruiser and I normally play 1500- 2500 points makes maneuvering your ships for facing all the more important and the bigger scale actually allows for more tactical decisions when you deploy and what is grouped with what.
