Given SMs role, it's too bad they didn't have a monitor (only has a prow bombardment cannon) and escort carrier as escort options. Even if they were priced in the 50-70pt range it might be more worthwhile than a Vanguard.

We could always check out how the hp increase affects the game and if it pushes SM over OP line, revert it, do something else.

Buuuut, with the frequency of balance changes, it's is simply not an option sadly.

The Vanguard is in a weird position. Its kind of in between an escort and Light Cruiser. Something else they could consider trying:

Give the Vanguard 200 shields. Have a series of 'lighter' variants stripped down functioning as very heavy escorts. 100 shield, 400HP, 6 turrets, with the same strengths and weaknesses escorts have. One variant would just have a bombardment cannon, one would have a thunderhawk bay, and one would have a quad torpedo launcher. Since they're no longer line ships (can't take more than 3 upgrades, can't take active skills or favors). Price them somewhere in the 55-75 point range. The mini-carrier in particular would be useful; since it couldn't take abilities it couldn't take Stormhawk squadrons, but it could take auto refueling and bombers. This could give some zippy pocket bombers to give ranged hitting power at sub-light cruiser prices. It also gives a nice price point where you don't have enough points for a light cruiser, but don't really need 1.5 escorts.
