Did the change to Escort Ship Emergency Repairs make Convoy missions too hard to defend?

Postby aprg » 23 June 2016, 22:12

Since they changed the Emergency Repairs so that Escort Ships can't repair while heavily damaged, I'm wondering if Convoy missions are a little too tough to defend.

Used to be, if you had a transport on Heavy Damage that survived an enemy's pass, you could still repair it and hope it would recuperate enough that it might survive a second pass. Now, since Escort ships (including transports) can't repair on Heavy Damage, they're that much more vulnerable.

Personally I do feel it makes a difference. Not a huge difference, granted, but one nonetheless. Used to be I felt Convoy missions were a little harder to win as the Attacker and a little easier to win as the Defender. Now, I simply don't remember the last time I lost as a Convoy Attacker, and when I win as Convoy Defender, it's usually by the skin of the teeth...

What are people's impressions? What in general are your results as Convoy Attacker/Defender?

Yeah, it's especially true with Marines being a faction essentially designed to do just that. Still, I feel Transports are maybe a little too vulnerable now...

They kinda always were. Ramming is much easier in this than it was in TT, and what's more, Convoy missions are utterly changed from how they worked in TT (and to be fair, it would be rather impossible to do it the TT way). Since you can now choose who to fire at with ease, and facing doesn't matter for accuracy, interposing your ships and the like is much harder to do to defend them. Add to that the fact that Attacker has as many points as defender, and even the trick of Escort spam to try and fool your opponents (not that hard to figure out, by the way; just look for which group is moving slowest) doesn't really do anything useful.

There's necessary changes from TT to RTT that make it very difficult to balance properly while still remaining true to TT.

Iv'e always hated convoy defense. I just assume its a loss and move on. The only way to win one, is to pull off some crazy shenanigans, and hope the opponent falls for it. Usually about a 50/50 proposition. I generally just consider it a push if i dont lose any good ships in the fight.

It is not so hard. But you need a setup of ships kited for that. That means FULLY offensive ships , with torpeoes if possible that can intercept the enemy force before it reaches the transports. Then you try to slow bubble them alognside you if needed. Shoudl give you enough time to cripple their mobility.

Works as long as the enemy is not spamming escorts himself.
