Victory points calculation: your opinion

Postby Blexus Falconer » 26 January 2017, 16:49

Greetings Admirals,

You have been commanding your fleet for many months now. During those months, you have fought countless opponents, protected planets from your foes. You have also snatched priceless data from your enemies' hands and escorted numerous convoys to their destination.

The difference between Victory and Defeat is sometimes very thin: The amount of damage you dealt, the number of ships you destroyed or if you simply succeeded in your mission.

It brings the subject of the calculation of victory points at the end of the game:
Based on your experience, what do you think about it?
Are you satisfied of it?
If not, could you please elaborate? May be you have an idea to improve it?

We would love to know your feedback. :)

Thank you in advance.

Can you clarify what you mean by victory points? For ranked only matthers if you win or lose, and in persistent renown rewards are based on victory/lose and ships destroyed/damaged.

Talking about persistent mode.

In my opinion renown is one of the 3 major flaws that are driving away the new people. (Other 2 being random missions and ship unlock and leveling system). It is disheartening for new players after the inevitable first losses to look at the defeat screen and see all/most ships destroyed, seeing that <100 renown gain, and realizing that repairs will cost up to and over 200.

i dont know what to answer
its almost right, it just needs a little extra both for victories and kills
40k is for a large part about fighting to the last, victories against the odds and glorious last stands
but even if you win, if it cost you more then 2 C's it was actually a loss
and in the bigger fights it can easily cost you 4 C's making the victory twice as expensive as what you gained
unless you crush an opponent who stands no chance you will not make a profit
similarly if you decide to fight it out, take the risk and try to snatch victory against the odds, even if you kill every ship the opponent has except for 1 escort you will still lose massively
this makes growth slightly too difficult
like i said slightly, not much, it doesnt need a lot, just a tiny bit extra for doing good
until then it is more profitable to take 1LC a bunch of distraction escorts and take the loss points as guaranteed profit

In a sense I feel Escorts should have a greater impact on your rewards. Both when they survive (a bonus) and when they are destroyed (a penalty).

Admirals should have greater rewards in defeat, though victory should still be the goal, and as such have the greater income.

While not victory point calculation per ce, heavily damaged and destroyed ships could be cheaper to repair, so as not to punish a player down on his luck, or a new player. This could also make developing a new fleet less punishing (especially for the Eldar who lose ships left and right).

The bonus points for picking less ships should be greater. For excample if you have 90 points left and pick nothing, instead of having +90 bonus points there could be a 1.5x modifier, to reward daring players, and experienced players, in gambling that they can defeat their foe with less. 90 points left could become 135 bonus points?

( I know I mentioned the Eldar above, and I feel I should expand slightly on it, they are frail. Way back when they were redone they had their holofields changed, they had their firepower changed and speed changed, but with the addition of even more races, especially the Tau, the Eldar are both outgunned by some and frailest of all. Its come to the point playing Eldar even vs AI isn't that fun anymore and the only viable tactic seems to not engage at all, but use mobility and bombers in an endless flight. For the Eldar, picking escorts are a waste, as they will almost always be destroyed in seconds. Perhaps their holofields should be buffed again, perhaps even returned to their previous value? The previous changes in firepower and speed would remain and should keep Eldar form becoming overly powerful again. Ah well, I digress from the subject.)

Overall I feel one should either lessen the expenditure on damaged and lost ships and give a slight +5% to 10% increase in rewards, or retain the damage costs where they are but increase the rewards for loss to be closer to what a current win is, and increase the current victory rewards by about 15% to 25%.

I think some missions could use a bit of a review. Like if one player fails to engage in cruiser clash, it should not result in victory for that player just for running away.

As mentioned earlier, I think Skirmish needs to be looked at too. I already did a very long thread about it in the beta, but I'll reiterate the points here to save Blexus from a serious case of TLDR.

-Map selection: Be able to select maps.
-Enemy selection: Be able to select your enemy race. Chaos and Orks love infighting, but it is very rare for Imperials, and almost unheard of for Marines, Tau and Eldar. It would be a nice lore thing if we could avoid this.
-Renown gathering is too slow. I kinda like upgrading the ships, adding favours, but it is just too damn grindy. This is not an MMO where you need to keep players subscribed, so letting them pimp their ships easier may give new players an advantage.
-Option for skirmish to play more matches with bigger fleets. Like in Dawn of War games, I could play Space marines 1 vs 3 against orks or tyranids. Here imagine a 1vs3 as a Chaos admiral tries to fight off 3 smaller fleets of Imperials, Marines and Eldar. It would be a lot of fun.

Please help me change skirmish to be customisable. Its very important for PVE players.

I'd like some sort of VP system where you get points for serious damage/destruction/forcing withdrawal.

This would make suicide runs to win missions no longer an option. It would also prevent the defending fleet in cruiser clash from just running around to burn the clock down once they start to lose the game.
