My thoughts and ideas after extensive testing

Postby Carpatheon » 12 April 2016, 16:06

I have a few things I would like to see implemented in the game. My experience thus far has been mostly with Imperials, therefore I am only going to address ideas I would like to see implemented for them, as opposed to nerfing other factions.

1. Grouped ships traveling in formation.
When you create a group of ships, I wish they would stay in formation, and match speed with one another. It helps them by keeping together to help maximize firepower. This is important for Imperials as we cannot play the hit and run game that some factions are capable of and really need to maximize our fire.

I would like for formations to continue traveling where I send them, but still be able to recieve an attack order to concentrate fire on a ship without breaking formation to start circling the enemy, just keep shooting them till they move out of range. This would allow my fleet to stick together for support and punish anyone for making a direct attack. There are obviously still ways to break up a fleet formation, ramming and tractors come to mind, but it would be nice it my ships didn't break formation on their own.

The second benefit of formations is for PvP. It prevents the enemy from discovering which ships are escorts and which are line ships, by watching their variable speeds as they advance. Particularly important if you want your escorts to survive nova cannon fire.

2. Allow Crtl-Clicking on the ship silhouette in the fleet display to select multiple ships.
In the deployment phase its not much of a hassle to group ships, but mid battle can be frustrating to re-assign groups. The only easy way to do so is using the tactical cogitator. This is unfair to your opponent to have to slow the game down just to do fleet management.

This would be particularly good when using the Imperial Fleet favor of summoning new ships. It would help to get them sorted out quicker without requiring a Tactical Cogitator slow down (which also gives your opponent time to realize the new threat and prepare accordingly).

3. Presetting of fleet orders. (i.e. facing and range)
Being able to select default fleet orders for each ship would be nice. For example; all firestorm frigates set to forward facing and 3k range prior to battle. Most of my deployment phase is spent setting all my ships to the proper bearing and range. While you can do all selected ships at once, it still can be very time consuming for large fleets with multiple types of ship, and several times I have run up against the deployment timer.

Also when summoning new ships to battle (Imperial Fleet Favor) it would prevent another Cogitator activation as I sort out all the new ships.

4. Orders and skills used by the entire selected group.
When using a skill or an order it would be nice to have all selected ships use that same order or skill. For example; If I want a group to do silent running, they all enter it at once, instead of me having to TAB through the whole group and click the ability for each ship. Most of the time I use any order, I find that I am using it on multiple ships at once, be it focus fire, or reload ordinance.

Even with bombs this would work. If say you had 3 ships with plasma bomb selected and you activate the skill, all three would be used but you place them individually, one click at a time in different locations. I find that effectively using many skills or orders can involve use of the Tactical Cogitator, which again is unfair to my opponent to abuse, when you can simply streamline the process in other ways.

5. Unsure on how some abilities auto-use triggers.
This may simply be down to not having a good enough explanation for how each ability triggers on auto use, but some of them seem to never go off on their own. There are only a few abilities I regularly put on auto use, things like repair, and shield buffs, just so I don't forget to use them in the heat of battle. It would be nice however if there was a way to set your own triggers for when to use various abilities or orders.

Like setting it up to auto use reload ordiance if any ability it improves is on cooldown, or setting a range trigger for using Lock on Target. Ships with torpedoes or squadrons are often constantly using Reload throughout the game, and this would just give you one less then to have to deal with, because yet again, in order to make sure they all get done I have to use the Tactical Cogitator, and I know it can get annoying for my opponent.

Thanks for reading my stupidly long post. Congrats if you got this far. Happy Flying.

+1 On everything above

Especially your third point:

I feel this is something that could be done so easily and save so much time in that deployment phase.

Potentially even open up a 'preparation window' (sandbox mode) where you can alter skills, upgrades, favours, crew (everything customisable with the ships, including your point No. 3) - and it gives you an end tally of "This will cost you 'x' Renown" - just to save going back and forth with re-speccing ships and dwindling your renown away in small 25/100 point purchases!
Even when broken, a sword may still cut.
