Ship blows up for no reason

Postby Yrvann » 05 October 2016, 08:30

Hello,

I had a few issues with some of my ships going from full HP to 0 HP in half a second and for apparently no reason. This happened a few times to me in single player. For a flick second, I saw my ship (a despoiler battleship with ~900HP) get all four orange icons and a couple of fire icons before blowing up. The only ship the AI had left at the time was a Battle Barge with less than 50 HP that was trying to warp out. It also happened earlier when I was playing Tau and Imperial Navy.

I did not have time to take a screenshot and I do not record my games, but a similar thing can be seen in the following video (in a multiplayer setting): https://youtu.be/8U8PyWEg9Ro?t=4m27s

Hi Yrvann.

Thank you very much for this video.
We are aware of this issue but we're enable to find any reproduction.

I see that just before your Sa'Cea die, your defensive turret were firing. Did you remember if there is any ordnance around of your ship?

Thank you very much.

Hello,

The Sa'Cea wasn't mine. This is just some xenos Youtube channel I found by mistake.
It doesn't look like there was any ordnance around the ship though... However, it does look like there is a weird rock moving away from the ship right after it blows up.

I will try to gather more data, but since this seems to happen randomly, there is very little time to see what may have caused it.

Hello,

I managed to record something that might help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odWURWNTwyg
The sad part starts at 9:10.

If I recall correctly, a ship was always warping out when the problem occured. I also think ordnance might have something to do with it, possibly when launched from the ship trying to warp out. Fortunately, most assault boats failed, which could explain why it took more than 30 seconds for the ship to blow up this time around.

I hope this helps,
Cheers.

Hello,

I managed to replicate the problem. As it turns out, you need a ship that has ordnance launch bays.

Step 1: Launch bombers
Step 2: Launch warp procedures

More often than not, this will lead to the total destruction of the targeted ship.
I tried it on a Black Stone fortress in Elite rank 110. It works.

I hope this helps:

You mean the ship launches bombers, starts to warp out and then the ship that bombers fly at goes boom?

Makes sense. I've encountered it multiple times already, and every single time it was when the enemy ship (at least one) was being on the brink of destruction so if that is the case, I can attest to that.

Also indeed, every single time the ship I battled did indeed have launch bays (either Battle Barge, or Strike Cruiser launch bays variant, or Tau cruiser).
The sentence below is true

The sentence above is false

Thought I might as well put my info in as well; I tested this bug in Skirmish mode against the AI, and this is what I came up with.

After a few hours of testing out this bug, it appears that after having a carrier load its warp jump after launching bombers in close proximity to the targeted ship, it takes around 5-6 seconds for a ship that is the target of this bug to blow up in close range. At a longer range, the time it takes for an enemy ship to start taking critical damage increases (presumably due to bomber speeds). A ship with 3 points in Navigator or equivalent will warp out before a long range enemy takes damage (and will prevent the ordinance from doing damage). Furthermore, the larger voidships that have more hanger bays, caused a bit of lag shortly after the enemy ship hits 0, or more commonly, negative hull from the critical hits.

The visuals of the bombers seem to show them sitting around the carrier not moving while it loads the disengagement, so there is no sign of an attack to the targeted enemy ship. Also, even after the targeted ship has blown up, it still appears to be taking critical damage, as fire criticals continued to appear on the targeted ship after its destruction. I then checked some of the mechanics and situations to see if there was some way I could stop the enemy ship from taking critical damage. I found that If the disengaging carrier warps away or the owner of the ship cancels the jump as the enemy ship is taking the critical damages, the enemy ship continues to be destroyed. If an enemy ship cancels the loading of the warp jump after you launch the bombers, but before they take damage, the enemy ship will still start to take critical damage and shortly thereafter, be destroyed by it. However, if you launch the bombers, load the warp jump and then immediately cancel it yourself, then the ordinance appears to be wasted (the enemy ship does not blow up and the bombers do nothing except accompany the carrier). It also appears to affect assault boats as well, but in their case, using assault boats and loading a warp jump only affected the enemy ship with Fire, Hull Breaches, and temporary criticals, which is what their tooltip says they can only do.

I'm also assuming that the bug only affects line and escort ships, as when I tried out the bug against a space station and defense platforms, I could not reproduce the bug against them. It affected the ships defending the station, but not the station or defense platforms.
