Fighters stay out until they die or you launch new fighters, there is no time limit on them. Fighters and defensive turrets have the same mechanic vs ordinance. If you prioritize ships the ai will target them first and try to take them out, that can often help in managing ai. Also use stasis on them, I know it's counter intuitive, but having a fast dauntless with stasis to stop ai ships for 15 sec can make a huge difference. Unless the ally is eldar, then y...

Does brace for impact work vs asteroid fields damage?

If so a dauntless would take 0,2 damage per second, suddenly not so dangerous to go through.

Get behind them and ram them. Sounds silly but it works really well. If you use brace you will take almost no damage, while he will suffer quite a lot. Also, target generators. Not the normal target vs orks, but it takes out traktor. Oh and destroy escorts asap. Those little bastards hurt like he'll.
